On 26th December, 1914, the 2nd King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 2 Brigade, 1st Division left their billets in Essars and marched to Cuinchy near La Bassée and into some trenches there. The battalion diary recorded that this was a relatively peaceful period in the front line and makes no mention of any casualties. John Betts died from wounds on 31st December and it is likely that he was wounded while here. |
